Giving Tuesday Spotlight

When Adam Lowy grew up riding along in his family’s moving trucks in New Jersey, he had no idea those experiences would one day spark a nationwide movement. Today, he’s the founder of Move For Hunger, a nonprofit that partners with moving companies across North America to fight food waste and feed families in need.

In this special Giving Tuesday episode of IAT Insurance Group’s What’s Brewing podcast, Kevin Kolb, SVP of Moving & Storage, sits down with Adam to discuss how one small idea turned into a life-changing mission – and how we can all play a part in helping.

Listen to the full episode here.

From One Move to a Movement

The inspiration for Move For Hunger began with a simple observation.

“Every time someone moved, we noticed they were throwing away perfectly good food,” Adam recalled. “People just didn’t know what to do with it.”

That realization led to a simple idea: what if movers collected unopened, non-perishable food from customers who didn’t want to take it with them, and donated it to local food banks instead?

Within the first 30 days, Adam’s team collected 300 pounds of food. What started as a small act of kindness quickly evolved into a network of more than 1,400 moving companies nationwide, each one helping feed their local communities.

Local Movers, Local Impact

One of the most powerful aspects of Move For Hunger’s model is that donations stay local.

“If a moving company in San Diego collects food, it stays in San Diego,” Adam explained. “If it’s in New Jersey, it stays in the Garden State. We’re creating a way for people to help their own communities.”

That local focus has fueled a ripple effect. Movers have joined the boards of food banks, companies have started food drives, and customers have become advocates for change.

It doesn’t take much,” Adam said. “And it feels really good. Giving back is the most selfish thing you can do.”

Fighting Food Waste – One Kitchen at a Time

Beyond moving trucks, Adam wants people to recognize that reducing food waste starts at home.

40% of food waste happens in the home,” he said. “It’s about being mindful – use what’s in your fridge, embrace the ‘ugly’ produce, and get creative with leftovers.”

He even shared one of his favorite discoveries: carrot-top pesto. “I didn’t know you could make pesto from carrot greens – but it’s delicious,” he laughed.

Stepping Up for Giving Tuesday

As Giving Tuesday approaches, Move For Hunger is rallying support to meet a growing need. Food insecurity continues to rise amid economic uncertainty, and Move For Hunger’s work is more important than ever.

Right now, every dollar donated provides four meals to families in need – and an anonymous donor is matching contributions up to $50,000 through the end of the year.

We’re so grateful for partners like IAT,” Adam said. “Your employees and teams have been incredible – participating in step challenges, food drives, and fundraising. The engagement keeps growing every year.”

To show continued support, IAT surprised Adam on the podcast with an additional $1,000 donation, which will be doubled thanks to the matching gift.
