How to Stand Out in the Interview Process
Landing an interview is an exciting milestone, but standing out throughout the hiring process takes more than meeting the qualifications on paper. From preparing thoughtful questions to communicating your experience with confidence, the small details can leave a lasting impression.
We asked members of IAT Insurance Group's Recruitment team to share advice to stand out through the interview process. Whether you're beginning your career, exploring your next opportunity, or preparing for an upcoming interview, these tips can help you present your experience with confidence and authenticity.

‘One of the best ways a candidate can stand out is by approaching the interview as a two-way conversation. Strong candidates come prepared with thoughtful questions that demonstrate curiosity about the role, the team, and the company's culture. Asking insightful questions not only helps you evaluate whether the opportunity you’re interviewing for is the right fit for you, but it also shows genuine engagement, strategic thinking, and enthusiasm for the opportunity.
Something that also stands out to me in an interview is confidence. Take the time to reflect on your career journey, achievements, and the value you've brought to previous teams. When you can clearly articulate your direct experiences and speak to them with confidence, you create a memorable impression and help interviewers envision your potential impact in the role you’re interviewing for.’ - Megan Harrington, VP Talent Acquisition
‘I would say to do your preparation; candidates who take the time to research the company, understand the role, and connect their experience to what we’re looking for naturally stand out. Along with that, confidence comes from preparation. When you know your experience well and understand the company, it makes it much easier to show up authentically and make a strong impression. Preparation shows genuine interest, and that goes a long way.’ - Hailey Lloyd, Recruiting Coordinator
‘One piece of advice I consistently share with candidates is to approach every interaction as an opportunity to tell a clear, confident story about their value.
Throughout the process, whether it’s your resume, interviews, or follow-up communication. Focus on connecting your experience to the “why” behind the role. Strong candidates don’t just walk through their responsibilities; they highlight impact. Be prepared to speak to specific examples of how you’ve contributed, solved problems, or driven results. Hiring managers are ultimately looking for someone who can make a difference on their team, so clarity and confidence in how you communicate that is key.
Preparation also makes a lasting impression. Take time to understand the company’s business, values, and what success looks like in the role. When candidates can thoughtfully connect their background to the organization’s goals, it shows genuine interest and sets them apart. At the end of the day, the candidates who stand out are the ones who are intentional, prepared, and authentic in how they present themselves.’ - Sabrina Diclemente, Senior Recruiter
‘One key tip I’d share with candidates is to tailor your resume to both the role and the company. Instead of sending a generic resume, align your experience with the specific responsibilities and qualifications listed in the job description. Use similar language where it makes sense, and highlight achievements that directly relate to what that team is looking for. (e.g., if a job calls for experience with a particular computer system and you have it, don’t bury it! Highlight it prominently so it’s easy for recruiters to identify your fit.)
It also helps to reflect an understanding of the company, whether that’s industry knowledge, relevant experience, or outcomes that match their goals. A targeted resume shows you’ve done your homework and makes it much easier for recruiters and hiring managers to see your fit.’ - Thomas Tran, Associate Recruiter
Every interview is an opportunity to demonstrate not only what you've accomplished, but also how you think, communicate, and contribute. As our recruiting team shared, the candidates who make the strongest impression are those who come prepared, connect their experience to the role, ask thoughtful questions, and authentically communicate the value they can bring.
